What the work is done on.

The machines in this tool room, what each one is for, and what it means for your mould.

Vertical machining centre

CNC VMC

Cavity and core geometry cut on the Cosmos CVM 1050.

This is where the shape of your container actually gets made. Cavity and core blocks are machined here from the CAM programme, and the finish that comes off this machine decides how much hand work the mould needs afterwards.

What it means for your mould

Complex geometry is cut, not fettled into shape — so what you approve in CAD is what arrives in steel.

Surface Grinding

Two ALEX NH 8040 surface grinders for flatness and parallelism.

Mould plates have to be flat and parallel before anything else is true. Grinding is what makes a mould shut properly, and a tool that does not shut properly flashes on every shot for the rest of its life.

What it means for your mould

Plates that sit flat and shut clean, which is the difference between a mould that needs constant attention and one that does not.

Turning

Lathe

Centre lathes for bushes, core pins and turned components.

Every mould needs round parts — guide bushes, core pins, sleeves, neck inserts. They are turned here rather than bought in, which means a replacement can be made the same day rather than ordered.

What it means for your mould

A worn bush or a damaged core pin is replaced from here, not from a supplier with a lead time.

Toolroom & Assembly

Where components are drilled, fitted, aligned, polished and assembled into a mould.

Machining makes the parts; this is where they become a tool. Pillar drilling and tapping for the cooling and the fasteners, then fitting by hand — aligning the halves, polishing the cavity, and trialling the assembled mould before it leaves.

What it means for your mould

Nothing is sent out and returned with an explanation. When a trial is not right it is corrected on this floor and trialled again.

CAD / CAM / CAE

One CAD workstation and one CAM workstation, as recorded in the company presentation.

Representative image — not a photograph of this workstation.

Parting strategy, inserts, slides, cooling and ejection are developed in CAD before any steel is cut, and the CAM programme comes off the same model. Work starts from a drawing, a 3D file, a production-ready model or a finished sample — all four are workable, and the last one is more common than you would expect.

What it means for your mould

Problems get found on screen, where changing them is free, rather than on the machine where it is not.
